Welcome to À Rebours.

There are a great many Substacks that are devoted to political affairs and current events. This isn’t really one of them. At least, that’s not its main thrust.

The truth is, I wanted to talk about matters that are “bigger picture,” and less faddish, less contingent and subject to the daily news cycle. I really wanted to discuss and explore the changes that I—and many more diligent and perceptive observers—have noticed are lately convulsing the Right, and contributing to the growth of a New Right. Now, whether this is a good thing or a bad is not for me to say; though, I am rather inclined to think that it is certainly healthy, given the insupportable stagnation and ossification of political structures in the liberal-democratic West, which has been greatly to the benefit of the Left at the expense of the Right.

The result, perhaps predictably, has been a realignment, and a great revolutionary ferment that has shaped a New Right that is aggressive, aspirational, unafraid of questioning once-cherished shibboleths, and is full of a great deal of newfound intellectual vim and vigor after languishing in a decades-long, post-Cold War torpor that saw it ceding ever more territory to an increasingly unhinged Left.

Wherefore, I give you my new Substack, À Rebours, in which we shall explore together the contours of this New Right, including its more interesting figures, movements, intellectual undercurrents, and literary productions.

I hope you enjoy the ride!

Curiosity, as they say, killed the cat. And while it hasn't done me in yet, it has contributed to my terminal fascination with the tumultuous intellectual ferment on the Right—and that's what I intend to explore in greater detail in this Substack.
